FORMULA LIBRE - WESTERN PROVINCE Where racing is still serious fun
8 May 2010
I don't think Libre has had so much fun and good racing for a long time as we did this Saturday -17 cars made it onto the official entry list.
Although some very important failed to make it to the track, it was great to sit in the pits and see so many new cars and drivers to formula Libre Western Cape 2010. Imagine if we can get everybody onto the track!
Welcolme to Vic Pitro in his well turned out bright red Formula Gti - this together with Romanie's equally well turned out bright blue sister car have really added class to the Class A entry. This class now fields the biggest amount of entries in Libre. Together with Reg, Didier and Sarah (sidelined with a broken mounting) makes the Gti section the biggest seen for some years.

Pieter Lotriet has spent many hours on his Hawk LD17 Formula Ford, took to the grid adding some nostalgic memories of the Fords of the 70's. I was still having gremlins with the electrics on the Renault and was back behind the wheel of Calvins black Vee.
As for on the track news the day got off to a slippery start as the track was very oily during practice and Mike A and Romanie had hectic spins -luckily no damage while others krept around the track posting very slow qualifying times.
Race 1 saw Helder in the Reynard on pole position with new comer Mike Verrier of Knysna also in a Reynard up alongside him. Mike's eagerness caused him to spin coming out of turn two leaving Egmont and myself having to take avoiding action.

Reg and Helder had a momentous dice through out the race with "race wise ol' Reg " taking advantage of overtaking myself and Alvin in the last corners to take the chequered flag by just one second!. Myself and Alvin had a tremendous dice with Alvin getting past me for a while until I used a Warren trick to get past again (nothing like slip streaming in a Vee).

Didier had a very good race to finish ahead of Mike V, Egmont and Vic with Mike Adendorff taking third in Class C behind Alvin and myself.
Race 2 saw Helder beat Reg to the flag (by just 2 second thus winning the day in Class A by just 1 second). Didier eventually worked out how to pass a Reynard and took Mike V on the outside of the last corner. Egmont had a great dice with Vic eventually beating him by just over 1,2 of a second!
In Class B Pieter was battling with a front left flat tyre but still took the chequered flag.
I won Class C from Alvin and Mike A and even managed to finish the race on the same number of laps as the A class cars.
IOP results were not worked out on the day but Romanie will calculate them this week and I will circulate them and updated YTD results! Well done to all the drivers and ALL the assistants!! awesome day of real good fun!!!!
PS Last year we sent Didier back to school so that he could learn to count to 8 and not finish racing on lap seven! - seems we now have another problem with Reg who "topped up his engine with fuel and not oil" maybe we need to colour code caps with jerry cans or teach him the blonde answer of OIL -710 octane!!!!
